What to Do With Your Ahrefs Keyword Export

You exported 2,000 keywords from Ahrefs Keywords Explorer. Now what? Upload the CSV to Optiwing and it groups those keywords by live Google SERP overlap, so you know exactly which page should target which keywords - without a second subscription.

What Your Export Looks Like

Optiwing accepts Ahrefs Keywords Explorer exports directly, no reformatting needed. A typical export includes columns like Keyword, Volume, KD (Keyword Difficulty), CPC, and Parent Topic. Optiwing reads the Keyword column and carries Volume and Difficulty through to your clusters.

KeywordVolumeKDCPCParent Topic
standing desk45,00072$1.90standing desk
best standing desk18,00065$2.40standing desk
standing desk benefits3,60031$0.80standing desk benefits
are standing desks worth it2,10028$0.60standing desk benefits

Export as CSV from Keywords Explorer (the Export button, CSV format). Extra columns like Clicks, CPS, or SERP Features are fine - Optiwing ignores what it does not need. Files up to 100MB are supported.

The Workflow, Step by Step

1

Export your keywords from Ahrefs

In Keywords Explorer, open Matching terms or a keyword list, apply your volume and KD filters, and click Export to download the CSV. Any country database works - you will pick the matching Google location in Optiwing.

2

Upload the CSV to Optiwing

Sign up (100 free credits, no credit card), click +New on the dashboard, and select your Ahrefs file. Optiwing detects the Keyword, Volume, and Difficulty columns automatically.

3

Match location and device to your Ahrefs data

Pick the same country you exported from (for example, United States for the US database) and choose desktop or mobile. Clustering runs against live SERPs for that market, so your groups reflect what Google actually ranks there.

4

Launch the job and let SERP clustering run

Optiwing checks the top 10 Google results for every keyword. Keywords sharing 3 or more of the same top 10 URLs get grouped into one cluster, and the highest-volume keyword becomes the cluster's primary keyword. A few thousand keywords typically finish in minutes.

5

Review clusters and plan pages

Each cluster is one page to create or optimize. Notice how 'standing desk benefits' and 'are standing desks worth it' land in the same cluster: one article covers both. Ahrefs Parent Topic hints at this, but SERP overlap across your whole export gives you the full page map.

6

Export clusters or generate content briefs

Download the clustered list as CSV for your content calendar, or generate an AI content brief for any cluster (25 credits per brief) with headings, questions, and related keywords pulled from the live SERP.

What You Get Back

SERP-Backed Clusters

Groups built from real top 10 overlap, not shared words. You can show exactly why two keywords belong on the same page.

A Content Map

One cluster equals one page, with a primary keyword, supporting variations, and combined search volume from your Ahrefs data.

CSV Export

Download everything back out as CSV to drop into your content calendar, client report, or spreadsheet of choice.

Optional Content Briefs

Turn any cluster into an AI content brief with suggested headings and questions, ready to hand to a writer.

What It Costs

Clustering costs 1 credit per keyword, pay-as-you-go. There is no monthly fee on top of your Ahrefs subscription, and purchased credits never expire.

100 keywords100FreeCovered by the 100 free signup credits

10,000 keywords10,000$59Founder pack, $5.90 per 1,000 keywords

Content briefs cost 25 credits each, so a $10 pack also covers 40 briefs if you skip clustering. Mix and match however you like.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I upload my Ahrefs export directly, or do I need to reformat it?

Upload it directly. Optiwing supports Ahrefs Keywords Explorer CSV exports out of the box and reads the Keyword, Volume, and Difficulty columns automatically. Extra columns like CPC, Clicks, or SERP Features are simply ignored, so you do not need to clean the file first.

How many keywords can I cluster at once?

There is no keyword cap or query throttling. The only limit is a 100MB file size cap per upload, which covers hundreds of thousands of rows. For very large exports, split the file or trim unused columns to stay under the limit.

How much does it cost to cluster an Ahrefs export?

1 credit per keyword. Your first 100 keywords are free with signup credits, 1,000 keywords cost $10, and 10,000 cost $59 as a one-time pack. If you cluster regularly, the $20/month Starter subscription includes 5,000 credits at the lowest rate. Purchased credits never expire.

How is this different from the Parent Topic column in Ahrefs?

Parent Topic maps each keyword to the top-ranking page's main keyword, one keyword at a time. Optiwing compares the live top 10 results across your entire export and groups keywords that share 3 or more ranking URLs. That produces complete page-level clusters with a primary keyword and all supporting variations, instead of a single label per row.

Does this replace my Ahrefs subscription?

No, and it is not meant to. Ahrefs is where the keyword data, backlink analysis, and site audits come from. Optiwing picks up where the export ends: it turns that keyword list into SERP-backed clusters, a content map, briefs, and rank tracking on pay-as-you-go pricing. Most users run both.

What do I actually do with the clusters afterward?

Treat each cluster as one page. Use the primary keyword (highest volume in the cluster) for the title and H1, and work the variations into subheadings and body copy. Prioritize clusters by combined volume and difficulty, then generate a content brief per cluster or export the CSV into your editorial calendar.

Does my Ahrefs volume and KD data carry through to the results?

Yes. Volume and Difficulty from your export are attached to each keyword and rolled up per cluster, so you can sort clusters by total search volume when deciding what to write first.
