Free Keyword Clustering Template (CSV)

Turn a messy keyword export into a page-level SEO plan. This spreadsheet template maps every keyword to a cluster, a pillar page, an intent, and a target URL, and it ships pre-filled with 18 example rows from a home coffee gear site so you can see exactly how a finished clustering sheet should look.

Free download. No email required.

What's Inside the Template

Keyword and Search Volume

One row per keyword, straight from your Ahrefs, SEMrush, or Google Keyword Planner export, with monthly search volume for sorting.

Cluster Name

The group of keywords that should be targeted by a single page. Keywords in the same cluster share the same search intent and similar SERPs.

Pillar Page

The hub topic each cluster rolls up to, so your clusters turn into a topical map instead of a flat list of articles.

Intent

Informational, Commercial, Transactional, or Navigational. Intent decides the page type: guide, roundup, product page, or landing page.

Priority and Status

High, Medium, Low priority plus a workflow status (Planned, In Progress, Published) so the sheet doubles as a lightweight production tracker.

Target URL

The slug the cluster's page will live at. Filling this in early keeps internal linking consistent before anything is written.

How to Use It

  1. 1

Download the CSV and open it in Excel, Google Sheets, or Numbers. Keep the header row exactly as it is.

  2. 2

Replace the example rows with your own keyword export. Paste keywords and search volumes from Ahrefs, SEMrush, or Google Keyword Planner.

  3. 3

Sort by search volume, then work top-down: give each keyword a Cluster Name. Keywords belong in the same cluster when Google shows them roughly the same results.

  4. 4

Assign each cluster an Intent and a Pillar Page, then decide the Target URL where the cluster's page will live.

  5. 5

Set Priority using volume, difficulty, and business value, and update Status as pages move from Planned to Published.

  6. 6

Spot-check ambiguous keywords by googling them. If two keywords show mostly different top 10 results, split them into separate clusters.

Skip the Manual Clustering

Hand-clustering a few dozen keywords is fine. Hand-clustering 2,000 is a lost weekend, and gut-feel grouping gets intent wrong. Optiwing clusters keywords for you by comparing live Google SERPs: keywords that share 3 or more of the same results get grouped onto one page, exactly the way this template intends.

  • Upload your Ahrefs or SEMrush CSV, or send keywords from the Chrome extension, and get SERP-backed clusters in minutes
  • 1 credit per keyword, from $10 for 1,000 credits, and credits never expire
  • Export the finished clusters back to CSV in a format that drops straight into this template

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a keyword clustering template?

A keyword clustering template is a spreadsheet that organizes a raw keyword list into groups (clusters) that can each be targeted by a single page. This one includes columns for search volume, cluster name, pillar page, search intent, priority, status, and target URL, so the same sheet works as both a keyword map and a production tracker.

How do I know which keywords belong in the same cluster?

The most reliable signal is SERP overlap: google both keywords and compare the top 10 results. If they share several of the same URLs, Google treats them as the same intent and one page can rank for both. If the results are mostly different, they need separate pages. Tools like Optiwing automate this comparison across thousands of keywords.

Is this template really free?

Yes. The CSV is a direct download with no email capture, no signup, and no watermark. Use it for personal projects or client work.

Does the template work with Ahrefs and SEMrush exports?

Yes. Both tools export keyword lists with a keyword and volume column. Paste those two columns into the template and fill in the clustering columns yourself, or run the export through a clustering tool first and paste the grouped output.

How many keywords should I cluster at once?

For manual clustering in a spreadsheet, 100 to 300 keywords is realistic before it gets painful. Beyond that, use an automated SERP-based clustering tool and use this template as the output format for planning and tracking.

What is the difference between a cluster and a pillar page?

A cluster is a group of keywords targeted by one article or page. A pillar page is the broader hub topic several clusters roll up to. In the example data, the French Press Buying and French Press How To clusters both support the Coffee Brewers pillar.
